What’s Up?
OK. So remember when I went away for a few days last week?
a: Fermanagh is gorgeous.
b: Cottage was lovely.
c: Had so much fun.
However, I stepped out of the shower with wet feet—nattering away to the dog—and took the most amazing pratfall. My feet went out from under me and I just went down, flat on my face with no chance to break my fall.
Well, except with my chin…which I have a nice bruise on. Nothing broken, all my teeth are still where they are meant to be, and I didn’t damage anything around me when I landed! However, I have pulled some of the tendons in my ribs, so that’s fun.
It only hurts when I laugh!
Or hiccup. Or sneeze. Oh man, it hurts when I sneeze!
In news not related to my ribcage?!? Shiftless by TA Moore will out on June 19. It should be up for pre-order in short order, but until then…check out the cover!
Dead Man’s Handle - Chapter of the Week
We’re creeping in toward the end of Dead Man’s Handle, the first of my free audiobooks from the—to be blunt—AMAZING Kale Williams. So check it out!
Pupdate of the Week
Shout Out of the Week
The first book by R.J. Peterson is out now!
I know the author and they are a delightful, kind, and generous person. We are ‘ships in the night’ when it comes to his visits to my neck of the woods, but catching up with him is a yearly delight at GRL.
Check out Love on the Horizon now!
I mean, you might be! We are not here to kinkshame.
Must Read of the Week
This is fascinating. So much of modern detective fiction - as opposed to proceedurals - is based in the erosion of faith in the social structures that happened after the Great Depression in America. The genteel detectives of the Agatha Christie era (and I will hear NOTHING against her) who upheld the class structure in many ways, were replaced by these grim outsiders who did things their own way and suffered for it.
So it’s really interesting to read how the same genre evolved to reflect a different culture’s preoccupations and pressures.
Honkaku: a century of the Japanese whodunnits keeping readers guessing
These fiendishly clever mystery novels have spawned pop culture icons, anime and a museum. And, best of all, honkaku plays fair – you have the clues to solve the crime
After a day of joyous wedding celebrations, a bloodcurdling scream echoes into the night. The newlywed bride and groom are found dead in their bed, stabbed with a katana sword, now thrust into the snow outside. Their bedroom was locked from the inside, and there is no way the murderer could have broken in to do the deed, let alone escaped without leaving a trace. How was this impossible crime committed?
Such cool news! I’m so chuffed for them, and kinda tickled that it is Bangor! Because there’s a Bangor, Wales and a Bangor, North Down. And fairly frequently things I have ordered to pick up in one? Got sent to the other.
Thank goodness! I was looking for a reliable supplier of this stuff!
